Sermon: “Who’s on First?” Traci Hubbard

Luke 22:1-38 November 1st, 2026

We are the first generation that has dismantled all the major pillars, morals, ethics, and religious tenets that have held collective allegiance and societies together for thousands of years. Simultaneously we are the first generation since the nuclear energy age to have our sensory system animated in order to accommodate the fact that a shift has happened and we are entering the energetic era and our five senses are no longer adequate to help us navigate life. This is key to understand because it’s not about what we believe. It’s the fact that we have a psyche that accepted that there was something greater than ourselves. The generation – the society we are living in has taken that down. We no longer have a world which anyone living can assume we will make it make to our physical end without a destructive war. Humanity has the capacity to destroy to destroy all life, and it is celebrated because humanity has become inverted in a way that has not existed before. For the first time we have problems that are planetary in size, pandemics, and tridemics on the horizon. We have climate change and the challenge of the rising power of AI over the humans who created it. We are living with the reality of an artificial species coming to the table confident that it is the WHO on first. And, we have not adapted an understanding of how we live and work together as a bio spiritual, intellectual ecological system. Why? Because instead of focusing on nurturing our relationship with eternity – with Infinite LOVE within us and then outwardly living in awareness of how we love, we are focused on who is the teacher’s pet of the energy who is the universe’s eternal creative consciousness.

In our text today, Jesus has prepared a table and invited his team to dine. His betrayer is there, along with his wanna be inwardly coward, Peter, who wants to be first in command after Jesus departs. After all, Jesus did tell Peter that he was the rock he would build his ways of being upon, so in Peter’s mind, he had already been passed the torch of leadership which he mistook as power instead of sacrificial service. And John, well all John wanted to do was lay on the chest of Jesus to listen to and feel his heartbeat so he could become the first Mary Oliver in the history books. Then we have Thomas, and the rest of the men, plus the women who carried the ministry financially and spiritually, with one becoming the first preacher called and sent out by Jesus.

Folks, the questions humanity’s ego has lived with since souls incarnated is, “Who’s on first?” Who do we serve? Self, or Eternal Infinite LOVE – MYSTERY – The Kin-dom which is alive within us? Until human beings answer – settle this human life altering critical question, what’s on second base will not matter. The place human ego needs to land is in “I don’t know” – third base, where our self allegiance surrenders and our hearts are opened to see and experience a glimpse of home base – our source of being.

Our bodies are spiritual ecological centers from which we make decisions, create, and manage our realties. We are individual cells of a vibrant living breathing universe. The way we have understood life is obsolete to the ways we must understand life and along with everything that is becoming outdated are all the traditional religious mythologies that simply do not work. There is no place in or off our planet that Divine Mystery looks, behaves, and operates in a legal system. It is imperative that we evolve into an understanding of the Divine that is in according with Her nature, not ours, as it is the creative force of light and the holy law of love that is within all matter.

The purpose of our human life is not consumerism that turns our hearts and relationships into shopping carts of accumulation of human ways of thinking and living. As the world witnesses’ billionaires and trillionaires become their own “IM AMAZING” own shopping center, we are seeing humans assuming the power of “who’s on first” and taking on the power of life and death. And now they have crossed the Rubicon of the Madness Chip and decided, “Well, if what I have built goes rouge, I will live underground or build a new society on Mars.” We live in a world with a mindset controlled by greed that says, “You’ll die, but I won’t. And so, what! If we destroy this planet, I’ll build a new one.” Good times. Take me out to this ballgame? No thank you, yet here we live.

Have we noticed that we live in a time where a new language is spoken when individual speak about themselves that no generation before us has spoken? For example, “That’s my inner self speaking right now. Or my interior conscious self sees and therefore believes that…” No one before WWII spoke this language. We have adapted into a hybrid language of the soul through which we talk about our interior, and we are discovering emotional needs that we were never allowed to articulate before. We are expanding the field of our human

psyche, and our egos have gone off leash to be consumed with “Who’s on first?”

Who matters the most? The rich and powerful? The ones with a microphone? The ones born or adopted into a family that lives in the Wild Wild Western World where anyone can be a rifleman or woman with their ideas, tongues, behaviors and choice or weapon? And folks, we can take this to the bank – there is no more powerful weapon than our thoughts and words.

I wonder if any of the disciples at the table were wondering, “Was I born for this moment – this purpose? (which they still did not understand) How many of us have asked, “What is my purpose? What was I made for? When did it become the norm that we want to be and feel special? That we want to stand out, and we feel entitled to a life – a lifestyle that will be delivered to us? No previous generation has had the arrogance to have a kind of inner philosophy that thinks, “I am me, therefore I deserve this and that,” negating that every human is responsible to discover and create a life that matters and to help younger generations navigate their journeys.

Friends, when we ask, “What is my purpose in life? What is my purpose today? These questions are a prayer. And who do we expect to answer us? Where is our answer coming from – what is – who is the source of the answer we seek? Who – what - holds the genetic code book – the spiritual code book of our soul’s journey where we think we are entitled to know how our story ends? We want to know so we can protect ourselves from all we consider dangerous, which stunts our evolution into becoming fully human! Who do we think we are? Whose do we believe we are?

When we ask these questions, we are engaging in spiritual transformation because the way Mystery works shows us, “Okay, let’s clear the space. You want to know what the answers are? There isn’t a human language to explain the sacred language of what you are experiencing. You are not in a physical crisis. You are in a spiritual crisis.” And folks, this is where we find ourselves and our world today. We cannot medicate a spiritual crisis. Our answers will arrive when we surrender to this reality.

So, what do we do once we have surrendered? We sit in our souls, in the turmoil understanding it’s not a phycological whodunnit…who is making me suffer? It’s a spiritual crisis full of purpose and meaning to discover for ourselves, and then in community. No one here wants to arrive at the end of our physical life wondering whose life we really lived. Wondering who’s on first, and what’s on second. Surrendering to “I don’t know” but I know I am loved and I am here to love certainly gives us a view of home base – of the inner kin-dom that is in and out of this Universe.

May we leave the mindset of want to eat and be served and enter the kin-dom mindset of servanthood without swords of tongue or sharp metal. Until we understand that we are at bat and a pitch is coming while we trust Infinite LOVE as our inner and communal Coach, we will be stuck between bases, running and sliding to be safe, while all we were looking for our homebase – the place we stand on at bat. Who’s on first? May it always be love. Amen.
